2018 Season Overview
Welcome to the 28th season of the Pine Mountain Music Festival! The 2018 festival takes place June 15 - June 30 in Houghton, Calumet, Marquette, and Iron Mountain, in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula. This season's pièce de résistance is Bizet’s sensuous opera, Carmen, which is the 37th opera produced by PMMF. Amanda Crider, a brilliant singer and multifaceted artist, plays the role of Carmen. Many will recognize the return of tenor Isaac Hurtado (Ultimi: Three Tenors) as Don José and soprano Heather Youngquist (Resident Opera Artist, Rockland The Opera) as Micaëla. Baritone Christopher Holmes (Escamillo) rounds out a rock-solid lead cast.
Nearing their 25th appearance at the festival, the world-class Bergonzi String Quartet (our Quartet-in-Residence) delivers another compelling program of masterwork classical string quartets. The ever-popular UPstarts—young gifted musicians from the Upper Peninsula chosen via talent contest—bring their fresh energy and promising talent to the festival. And, in a continuing effort to diversify our programming, we bring in acclaimed French dancer, Karyne Arys, as our featured Flamenco artist, both for a standalone concert and as the gypsy dancer in Carmen.
